ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital Soaps - Christmas 2011

Each year The Travel Group tries to come up with innovative way to raise money for charities. This year with a bit of help from L’Occitane we were able to give gifts to our clients that will help the world with their sight.

According to the World Health Organization, 39 million people worldwide are blind. Yet, 80 percent of these cases could have been prevented or treated.  ORBIS hopes to raise awareness of both domestic and international blindness issues. For information www.orbiscanada.ca/FEHVancouver

On July 14^th 2011 the “ORBIS Flying eye hospital” kicked off its North American tour from Vancouver.  As the world’s first eye hospital with wings, this ORBIS DC-10 aircraft is a recognized icon in the fight against global blindness.

The Fondation L’Occitane has come up with a unique airplane-shaped solidarity soap that was inspired by the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. The ORBIS Get on Board for Sight Soaps are available in blue and pink. The soaps are currently available at L’Occitane retails outlets across Canada and online at http://ca.loccitane.com/.  All proceeds (100%) from the sale of these soaps will benefit the ORBIS eye health project in Burkina Faso, where L’Occitane sources its shea butter in a fair trade agreement.

Grand Cariboo Opry, 6th Annual

The Grand Cariboo Opry with Barney Bentall & Guests (Ridley Bent, Matt Masters, Dustin Bentall, Kendel Carson to name a few) is an annual fundraiser in support of the Potluck Café Society. Over the last five years, the Opry has raised enough money to feed over 40,000 nutritious meals to residents living in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside.

Back by demand for the sixth consecutive year, Barney Bentall & The Grand Cariboo Opry roll into Vancouver’s historical Vogue Theatre for another highly anticipated performance on November 19th.

  

The Opry is a highly entertaining classic variety show experience hosted by Barney Bentall, who works through humourous monologues and fronts a big band consisting of the Legendary Hearts and many other talented musicians, augmented with lap steel, fiddle and piano. Everyone plays and everyone sings....sometimes all at once! The show is chalked full of music, humour, warm wit and unique sponsorship promotions reminiscent of another era.

Helping our clients with their fundraising

We do not do all of our fundraising directly. Sometime we help out our clients with door prizes and silent auction items. This week a client of ours is doing a big office fundraiser, raising money for United Way. We sent over a big prize to sweeten the pot !

Breast Cancer Fundraising Event

October is Breast Cancer awareness month, and each year clients of The Travel Group’s does some major fundraising within their company.  Each year The Travel Group makes a donation to their silent auction, and this year was no acceptation. A donation A donation of a gift certificate was sent to their office in Ontario in hopes to raise some money towards cancer research.

Keep your eyes peeled for their Vancouver fundraising event, and hopefully a few groupies will be able to attend in our pink attire !

Back to School

Each year we gather together a stalk of clothes for the kids in the downtown east side. This year we decided to help the kids out in a different way with note books, pencils, crayons of all colours, paints, and even a few backpacks.

Longest Sunday of the Year Walk / Run - 3rd annual

Thanks to everyone for participating in the
Longest Sunday of the Year Run/Walk.
It was a great success, raising more money each year !

A big thanks to James at Air Canada for their sizable donation.

Vancouver is still waiting for our summer to begin, but all the sun dancing worked. Sunday was a fabulous day!! The temperature broke 20’C and the sun block was needed.

 

Before heading out on our run or walk we did a quick warm up to loosen the muscles.

The Longest Day’s youngest contestant
took home the fastest walker.

5 year old Sidney, took home the gold medal for 5km

 

Raul, a first timer, snuck past the finish line a mere milliseconds ahead of the rest of them.

Anne-Marie took home the prize for sexiest shorts once again this year.  It was her  complete outfit with sparkling runners, that put her ahead of the rest.

WolfPack, North Delta Footy Dance

Saturday, June 18th 2011, The WolfPack Footy Team is fundraising one last time for their trip to Australia. The Travel Group has donated an amazing Australian Cookbook, complete with recipes for alligator and emu, for their silent auction.

Tickets are $15 at the door, North Delta Rec Center.

On Track Gala Fundraiser

Monday June 13^th 2011 you can help the Odd Squad On Track in fundraising money for the East Side. The Fundraising Gala is being held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. A silent auction, live auction, elegant dinner and fine entertainment are on the agenda.

ON TRACK celebrates youth making healthy lifestyle choices, by empowering them with the information and experience necessary to further their positive leadership roles within their community.

The Travel Group  has donated a suit case full of trinkets for the silent auction.



Relay for Life, 10th Anniversary

The Travel Group's, Annie, will be walking in the
10th Anniversary of the Relay For Life on the North Shore!

A cancer survivor herself, and cancer free since 1993.
Annie has participated in this event for 9 years, as part
of the North Lonsdale United Church Team.
Helping with the survivor's breakfast, and the survivor lap.

All day there are bands playing as teams walk the track.
There are different themed laps. 3 legged lap, a walk backwards, hop on one foot, & wearing a funny hat. Just to name a few.

The last lap is very moving. The luminaries are lit which line the track. These are paper bags filled with sand, and a tea light. On the bag is written "in memory", "in support" or "in honour"of a person affected by cancer. Then at dusk, everyone walks around the track in silence holding lit candles.

Annie relays in memory of friends that have lost thier battle with cancer, too many and way too young.

CoDev FunRaising Dinner

On Saturday June 4^th 2011 join CoDev in fundraising for women, workers and families throughout Latin America supporting public education, human rights, community development and fair trade.

The Travel Group  has donated a 2010 gold medal winning bottle of Cassini Pinot Noir Reserve to the annual fundraising dinner and silent auction event.

Spring Cleaning

As any other home or office The Travel Group recycles paper and bottles on a daily basis. We are also part of an excellent electronic recycling program.

As computers get upgraded around the office, the ones that are replaced and still in working order get wiped of any personal information, then we delete the programs that are not standard to windows set up. We then donate them to ERA who distributes working electronics to Schools and Charities in need.

Return - It @ Work

November of 2009, The Travel Group entered into the ‘RETURN-IT’ @ WORK program through Encorp. This program provides offices with beverage container recycling bins and a pick-up service free of charge, allowing everyone in our office to recycle their empty beverage containers and recycle responsibly. All money collected is donated towards our Downtown Eastside Charities.

WolfPack Footy FunRaising

Throughout the year The Travel Group donates door prizes and silent auction items to different companies for them to use to raise money.

This Friday, April 15th 2011, The WolfPack Footy Team is fundraising at Lafflines Comedy Club in New Westminster. The Travel Group donated a carry on travel suitcase for the silent auction.

A 90 minute comedy act followed by a silent auction, ticket sales go towards the WolfPack Footy team who are raising money to go to Australia in August to compete in Aussie Rules

April is Daffodil Month

Every three minutes another Canadian is faced with fighting cancer. This April, as part of the annual Daffodil Month, The Travel Group will joined in the fight against cancer.

On April 1^st we will all be wearing a daffodil pin to show our support.

Friday Wine Down

In conjunction with our casual wear Friday’s we finish off the work week with a “Friday Wine Down.”

Each week we have a tasting of wine and cheese.

Today we will be tasting wines and cheeses from Italy.  Each person is asked to donate $1 to sample, and all donations go towards the Vancouver Downtown Eastside.

Queensland Flood Appeal Fundraising

Significant flooding occurred in many areas of

Queensland during late December 2010 and early January 2011,

with three quarters of the state declared a disaster zone.

 

The Travel Group was a proud supporter of the
OLD Flood Appeal Fundraising put on by Moose's Down Under.
All proceeds were sent directly to the Premier's Flood Appeal Fund.
